James Earl Rudder: Leadership on the Battlefields of Europe

June 4, 2022 - June 16, 2022

The National WWII Museum is thrilled to partner with the Traveling Aggies to bring you to the sites of an Aggie hero’s legendary leadership. In 1943, Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder ’32 took command of a new, elite force within the U.S. Army, the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Overseeing their training in the United States and in England, Rudder proved himself to be a great leader, building troop morale and maintaining unit cohesion. On D-Day, Rudder led 225 men in an assault on Pointe du Hoc, a steep, 100-foot-high cliff to the west of Omaha Beach. Making it to the top, neutralizing the German defense and establishing the first U.S. command post in Normandy, the Rangers became legendary for their actions.
