Sul Ross Group Holds 73rd Reunion

Hannah Lang '18 April 13, 2020 2:41 PM updated: April 15, 2020 1:09 PM

The Sul Ross Group gathered in Aggieland early in March for their annual reunion, where they inducted their newest members, the Class of 1965. Originally formed in 1947, the Sul Ross Group is made up of all Aggies that have celebrated 55 years or more since graduation.

This year, as the Class of 1965 was inducted, the group saw its first two women join the ranks. Holley King ’65 and Sallie Sheppard ’65 were some of the first women to graduate from Texas A&M, and now, over 50 years later, they are still breaking barriers. You can hear Dr. Sallie Sheppard's thoughts on this milestone at tx.ag/SulRossWomen.

In March, Holley King ’65 and Sallie Sheppard ’65 became the first two women to be inducted into the Sul Ross Group.

The Sul Ross Group reunion weekend consisted of food and fellowship, where Group members were able to remember and celebrate their days as students, hear from university officials and student leaders about the current state of Texas A&M, and even watch a virtual tour of campus that highlighted changes through the decades.

At one of the group dinners, Ridley Briggs ’54 gave a brief speech honoring the Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag. Briggs served as president of the Sul Ross Group from 2013-2014. Watch an excerpt from his speech below.

At the Friday night banquet, attendees enjoyed a surprise speaker when John Adams ’73 dressed as the Group's namesake, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, giving a speech from Ross' perspective. You can see a clip from his speech below.

Members of the Sul Ross Group and their guests were able to meet Reveille at one of the evening events, a special occasion no matter how many years it has been since graduation. You can view the photos here
