Zachary R. "Zac" Cook '08, 22, of Lufkin died Jan. 12, 2009, when the Black Hawk helicopter he was aboard crashed on Duncan Field on the Texas A&M University campus. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, temporarily assigned to the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Texas A&M while waiting to attend officer training school. He was a member of Company D-1 in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. The helicopter was one of five with the 236th Combat Aviation Brigade based out of Austin in a routine mission shuttling Corps of Cadets members from the university to Camp Swift in Bastrop County for ROTC winter field training exercises. Survivors include his parents; a brother, William D. Cook, Jr. '06; and paternal grandparents.
