At Somerville High he lettered in football, basketball, track and baseball. He attended Texas A&M, where he was an All-American and where he played a vital roll on the 1939 Aggie national championship team. He was drafted by the NFL in the 1943 draft. He then served in WWII as a 1st Lt in the US Infantry where he was severely wounded in action. Upon returning to Somerville, Tx he got his college degree. He became a high school coach and history teacher, where he inspired many young men and women.

Elvis A. “Boots” Simmons, 90, of Somerville (formerly of Austin) died February 2, 2010 at Copperas Hollow Nursing and Rehab Center in Caldwell. Boots was a member of the Aggie football teams of ’40, ’41, and ’42 and played on the 1940 and 1941 Aggie Cotton Bowl teams. In 1942 he was co-captain of the team, selected on the All-Southwest Conference team and named on some All-American selections. Upon completion of Boots’ college football years, he was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals and offered a contract from the Washington Redskins. He was unable to sign with the Redskins due to an injury incurred in combat during World War II. While serving as a lieutenant with the United States Army Infantry at St. Malo, Normandy in France, Boots was struck by shrapnel from German artillery fire, sustaining injuries for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. After the war, Boots returned to A&M and earned the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Education, after which he taught in public schools in Texas for more than 35 years, retiring in 1979. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mike McInturff ’73, one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Marsha Simmons; seven granddaughters, Adrianne ’97 and Jeff Brode ’97, Ashley ’99 and Jon Kotinek ’99, Allison McInturff ’03, Alaina McInturff, Lea Standley, Meredith Herndon, and Laura Simmons; and two great-grandsons, Noah and Samuel Kotinek.
