Dixie Chicken Coop

Susan "Sue" Owen '94 April 22, 2016 1:48 PM updated: April 22, 2016 1:59 PM

The Dixie Chicken Coop is open for business! This palatial chicken residence built by Marty Holmes ’87 has been drawing attention online, so we asked him for the scoop on his coop.

Eight baby chicks currently occupy it, and “more bells and whistles are coming,” said Holmes, who is a vice president at The Association of Former Students. He and his wife had kept chickens in the past and wanted to renew their supply of fresh eggs, but decided this time to make the coop visually appealing. Holmes built it using materials including old fence pickets, and says in the near future there’ll be a “Bottlecap Alley” pathway down one side. Drinking and dining inside will be options for the chicks--he’s installing a gravity-fed waterer and feeder. The interior is 7 feet by 4 feet, aka “28 square feet of livable chicken space,” plus there's an 8-by-16 outdoor chicken run.

Have you added a piece of Aggieland to your home?
