Time Capsule Placed In Aggie Ring Replica

Stephanie Cannon '06 October 27, 2010 9:06 AM

The Association of Former Students of Texas A&M dedicated and placed a time capsule inside the 12’ Aggie Ring replica on the Haynes Ring Plaza of the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center on October 30.  The time capsule is intended to be opened in 2046.

The capsule rests inside the Ring and contains memorabilia from Reta and the late Harold J. (Bill) Haynes ’46, lead donors to the $17 million enhancement of the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center completed in 2009.  Among the items included in the capsule are Mr. Haynes’ Aggie Ring, a letter written by Mr. and Mrs. Haynes in 2008 to the Class of 2046, photographs, and a program from the 2009 rededication of the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center.

Association of Former Students President and CEO, Porter S. Garner III ’79, predicted the time capsule would provide future generations of Aggies with an important link to the past.

“Thirty-six years from now the Class of 2046 will open this capsule and will be reminded of the noble selfless servants who nurtured and preserved our great university,” Garner said. “As they learn more about Reta and Bill Haynes they will see the influence of lives guided by Texas A&M’s core values of
excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect and selfless service.”

Garner was joined by university representatives, as well as the Haynes’ daughter, Sharon Early, and grandson, Michael Early, in the brief outdoor ceremony.  Representatives of Deep in the Heart Art Foundry, creators of the one of a kind Ring replica, inserted and secured the time capsule using a specially designed tool.

Since its installation in 2009, the Aggie Ring replica has become a popular campus landmark, drawing visitors daily to the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center.  The Ring’s crest bears the Class year 1946 in honor of Mr. Haynes and the generous support he and his wife have provided to Texas A&M and The Association of Former Students.

The Association of Former Students, established in 1879, is the official alumni organization of Texas A&M University. The Association connects the 500,000 members of the worldwide Aggie Network with each other and the University, and provides more than $6.4 million a year in impact to University scholarships, awards, activities and enrichment for students, faculty, staff and former students.
