Roby, Oct. 22 - Pfc. Mondel Rayburn (Corky) Ammons, 21, was killed in action in Korea Oct. 17, his family was notified here Monday.
He was serving with A Company, First Tank Battalion, First Marine Division, FMF, in Korea. He had been in action there since Aug. 4.
Pfc. Ammons was the youngest brother of Roby Mayor Johnny M. Ammons, and son of John W. Ammons of near Sylvester. Another brother is Ralph Ammons, Roby florist and service station owner.
Last letter from Pfc. Ammons was received by Ralph Ammons. It was dated Oct. 14, postmarked Oct. 17. Pfc. Ammons said that his outfit was to be replaced in several days and that the unit was to pull back from the front lines for a month's rest.
He was born in the Busby community Dec. 6, 1929. Pfc. Ammons graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1948 and later attended Texas A&M and Texas Tech. He volunteered for Marine duty in January and was sent overseas July 14.
Survivors include his father; his two brothers of Roby and a third brother, Alvis Ammons of Wolforth, near Lubbock, and Earnest Ammons of El Paso; also three sisters, Mrs. Loy Neeper of Sylvester, Mrs. Marvin Etter and Mrs. T.A. Hall, both of Sweetwater.
