James Nub "Nub" Neighbors '75 June 7, 2010 2:06 PM

Denton Record-Chronicle May 21, 2010 Dr. James Nub Neighbors Dr. James Nub Neighbors Dr. James Nub Neighbors, DVM passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his home in Denton, TX after a courageous twelve month battle with cancer.Known as Nub all his life to family, friends and clients he was born James Douglas Neighbors on November 28, 1943 in Brownwood, TX. His parents were Heubert Doyal and Viola June Gilbreath Neighbors.Before graduating from Texas A&M he had his name legally change to James Nub Neighbors to begin his veterinarian practice as Dr. Nub Neighbors and to create his beloved NN brand. Nub attended San Angelo Central High School before transferring to and graduating from Lubbock High School in 1962.Before starting college he joined the Texas National Guard where he served four years. He began his college education at Texas Technological College finalizing his education with his Doctorate of Veterinarian Medicine at Texas A&M School of Veterinarian Medicine in the Class of 1975. He began the career he loved in San Angelo, TX in 1975.In 1979 he purchased the South Denton Animal Hospital where he practiced for 31 years. Nub mentored a young veterinarian, Cody Bullock, who along with Debbie Strebig, Nub's Vet Tech for the past 30 years, have kept SDAH open and serving the needs of all SDAH loyal clients during Nub's illness and who will continue to take care of their needs. Nub loved the animals and most of his clients. A true cowboy at heart he loved all things Western, horses, team roping and collecting memorabilia. He, too, was an avid golfer and has played golf with the same group of friends most Wednesday afternoons for the past 25 years. But his true love was his horses and Labrador retrievers. Nub loved breeding, raising, doctoring and racing quarter horses. The highlight of his horse racing career came in November 2003 when his quarter horse 'Mitowilard' won the Texas Classic Futurity Grade I at Lone Star Park with the highest grossing purse at that time in Texas of $ 1,088,846.00. Nub was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his sister, Linda and husband Paul Wooldridge of Winchell, TX and his brother, Dale Neighbors of Denton, TX.He, too, is survived by his Aunt Velma and husband Wesley Adams of Winchell, TX and Aunt Pauline Dopson of May, TX and niece, Shane Hagood of Cedar Park, TX. He had no children but considered Cody Bullock, the son he never had and step-daughter, Becky Placke, the daughter he never had. At his request, there will be no funeral service. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered in six locations special to his heart. Nub asks that his coffee drinking, team roping and golfing buddies and anyone who considered him a friend to remember him fondly in a way of their choosing remembering that he loved each and everyone of them like he loved his family. In lieu of flowers, he suggests you remember The Class of '75 Scholarship Fund at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
