Petty, Sr., 75, of Lufkin will be held Friday, August 21, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Eugene Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Largent Cemetery. Dr. Petty was born September 4, 1933 in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Gertrude (Restelle) and Joe Petty, and died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 in a local hospital. Dr. Petty served his country as a Specialist 1st Class in the U.S. Army. He had resided in Lufkin since 1978 and served as Superintendent of Hudson ISD. Dr. Petty also taught at Angelina County Junior College. Dr. Petty served on the Woodlawn Water Board for many years, and was a patron of the Arts for the Angelina Arts Alliance and the Angelina Playhouse. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Athena Petty of Lufkin; son, William Petty, Jr. of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Giela and Otis Brieden of Lufkin; grandchildren, Richard Rudel, Jr. and Jennifer Rudel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Billy Bain, Nancy and Paul Terry, all of Ida, Louisiana, and Julianne and Tom Tebbe of Louisiana; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 116 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
