Roll Call Tribute

Mavis Rollins '50 September 23, 2008 12:00 AM

Mavis A. Mills Rollins '50, 79, of Longview (formerly of Port Arthur) died Aug. 10, 2008, after a lengthy illness. She was an active educator for 45 years including Fort Polk, La.; Fort Sill, Okla; Sioux Ordnance Depot, Neb., and Longview. She received her doctorate from Texas A&M in 1980 and became coordinator of science and social studies for Longview ISD in 1983. She was supervisor for science health and physical education in 1995 when she moved back to the classroom as a faculty member of the University of Texas at Tyler. She retired in 1995. She was National Science Teachers Association/NASA Region V director for student space shuttle experiments for five years. Her many awards include the American Chemical Society's Southwest Region Award in High School Chemistry Teaching. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Vicheal G. Rollins '50; a son; a daughter; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert P. Mills '69.
