Published in Odessa American on March 10, 2010 Roy Lloyd "Cap" Peden(1919 - 2010) KERMIT Roy "Cap" Lloyd Peden, of Kermit, died March 8, 2010, in Odessa, Texas. Roy was born in Peden, Texas, on Dec. 23, 1919, to Ruth and Lloyd Peden. He was the older brother of Leslie Earl Peden. Roy attended school in Azle, Texas, and graduated valedictorian of his high school class in 1935. Roy continued his education at Texas A&M University in College Station where he graduated in 1941 with a degree in Agriculture Education. While at Texas A&M, Roy lettered four years on the baseball team, playing his last year on the team with his brother, Les. He went on to play baseball at the professional and semi-pro level. Roy met his future wife, Ann Carter on a blind date. Roy and Ann were married on April 3, 1942, in Houston, Texas. They begin their married life in Van Horn where Roy took a position as a County Agent with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. After a short stay, Roy was transferred to Winkler County where he worked until his retirement in 1975. Ann died April 1, 1985. After retiring from Extension Service, Roy took his golf game to a new level. In 1977, he won the U.S. National Open for Seniors - the first amateur to accomplish that feat. He also won the Life Begins at Forty Tournament twice and was runner-up two times. In addition, he competed in golf tournaments throughout Texas and all over the U.S. On five different occasions, Roy hit a hole-in-one during his golfing years. He continued his golfing until his eyesight prevented him from playing. For 30 years, Roy could be found running up and down the sidelines officiating football games, calling balls and strikes behind the plate or calling fouls on the basketball court. He was the baseball coach for his son's baseball team, which went to the state tournament. Roy was a charter member of the First United Methodist Church in Kermit, member of the Masonic Lodge, Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and a 60-year member of the Kermit Downtown Lions Club. In addition, Roy continued his membership at the Winkler County Country Club, which has held an annual tournament in his honor for the last six years. He was a charter member of the U.S. Society of Senior Golfers. He is survived by his five children, Suzanne Harris and husband Al of Odessa, Carol Schoenhals and husband Lyndon of Lubbock, Pam Scott and husband Andy of Monte Alto, Tim Peden and wife Debbie of Odessa, Nikki Hilton and husband Mike of Odessa. Gramps was proud of his 11 grandchildren, Sandra Harris, Nanci Harris, Shelly Barba and husband Ian, Timothy Schoenhals, Stephanie Scott and husband Gabe Araiza, Jessica Scott and husband Russell Murden, Steven Scott and wife Bonnie, Joe Peden and wife Clara, Zac Peden and wife Erin, Jared Hilton and wife Sarah and Jillian Hilton and husband Philip Blakema; and 6 great-grandchildren. Five of his grandchildren followed him to also graduate from Texas A&M University, where two grandsons lived together in the same dorm Roy lived in as a student. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, at Kermit Cemetery. Followed by a memorial service 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Seymour officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the First United Methodist Church, 744 Jeffee Drive, Kermit, Texas, 79745.
