Shelby R. Metcalf, Jr. '74, 76, of Bryan (formerly of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Germany) died Feb. 8, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He coached Texas A&M men's basketball for 26« years (the first five seasons as freshman coach) from 1958 -1990. He won 438 games, 239 of them in Southwest Conference play. Both are league records. His first team won the SWC championship in 1963-64 with a 13-1 record and A&M's first SWC basketball title in 41 years. His teams went on to win the SWC championship in 1969, 1975, 1976, 1980 and 1986 and make 11 post-season appearances. He received a doctorate from Texas A&M while he was coaching. He worked for Texas A&M's Center for Academic Enhancement after he was no longer coaching. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Texas A&M Hall of Fame in 1998 for his record as the coach with the most wins in Southwest Conference history. The Shelby Metcalf Classic was initiated at Texas A&M in November 2006. The Shelby Mecalf Plaza adjacent to Reed Arena was dedicated February 23, 2007. He was selected twice to Whos's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Janis; a daughter, Shelley Metcalf Valerius '83; and two grandchildren.
