Roll Call Tribute

Arturo "Art" Sobarzo '94 April 4, 2022 4:37 PM updated: April 4, 2022 4:41 PM

José Arturo Sobarzo López
April 11, 1971 - January 05, 2022

José Arturo Sobarzo López was born on April 11, 1971 to José Arturo Sobarzo Ballesteros and Concepcion Lopez Moreno in the beautiful city of Chihuahua, Mexico. Art passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2022 at the graceful age of fifty.

Art's family moved to the Houston area at the early age of 1. He was a long-time resident of Katy, Texas and graduated from Katy High School in 1989. Art was an extremely versatile individual and showed outstanding ability in athleticism and academics, as well as a knack for creativity. He participated in multiple sports, including baseball and tennis, and his creativity was on full display during his theatrical performances, where his naturally mischievous, friendly personality drew you in beyond the character he was playing. Art had exceptional leadership skills, skills that manifested even in his youth; at the age of five, he was asked to collect bugs for a school assignment, and was later found to have delegated the other children in the neighborhood to complete the task for him. Years later, we still laugh when someone tells this story.

Art pursued a higher education at Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas where he excelled as a baseball player and then transferred to Texas A&M in College Station, Texas to obtain a degree in Communications. While at Texas A&M University, he held a coveted position in the campus's television production program. Art went on to have a successful career as a Media Director, living and working all over Texas—Dallas, Houston, and El Paso. His name was well known in the television space, highlighted by his diligence and work ethic at Univision, Telemundo and ABC Channel 13. His achievements were publicly recognized in 2014, when he brought home an Emmy Award as the Marketing Director at Telemundo. His career path progressed from Camera Operator to Creative Services to General Manager, the last position he held at NBC.

Art had many interests outside of work as well, and was a devoted fan of all things Star Wars, Marvel, and DC. He also loved to express himself with flashy shoes, rings, and bracelets—truly indicative of his larger-than-life personality.

Art is survived by his beloved children; son Chaz, daughter Allyssa, and daughter Lynzi. His cherished parents; mother Conchita Lopez Sobarzo; father Jose Arturo Sobarzo and wife, Maria Sobarzo. He is also survived by his brothers Jaime Sobarzo and fiancée, Kelli Minze; Gabriel Sobarzo and wife, Raina; Daniel Sobarzo and wife, Lindsey; Miguel Sobarzo, and Samuel Sobarzo. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins who loved him very much.

The family will receive friends for a Memorial Service on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at North Katy Campus Kingsland Baptist Church located at 24111 Stockdick School Road, Katy, Texas 77493.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Art Sobarzo to the National Alliance to End Homelessness (https://endhomelessness.org), American Heart Association, or Go Fund Me fund for Allyssa and Lynzi Sobarzo, https://gofund.me/b6411314.
