Charles Frank Milstead Sr.
November 21, 1937 – February 17, 2022
Charles Frank Milstead, Sr, died peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2022. He was born on November 21, 1937 in Tyler, Texas to Harry Frank Milstead and Ruth Lyle Milstead.
Left to treasure his memory is his wife of 63 years, Jill Grainger Milstead, his sons and daughter-in-law, Charlie '83 and Beverly Milstead, Mark '85 and Sarah Milstead, and Lyle '89 and Trish Milstead.
He is also survived by his six wonderful grandchildren, Alex Milstead, Ashley '18 (Milstead) Wilson & husband Colby with great-grandson Hudson expected in June, Michael Milstead, Luke Milstead and Will '08 & Aaron Thompson.
He quarterbacked his John Tyler High School football team to the state finals in 1955 and continued in that position throughout his college career at Texas A&M University. He graduated with honors from Texas A&M in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. Having been awarded All-SWC honors in 1958-59, All-America Quarterback and Academic All-America in 1959, he was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. After college, he was drafted in 1960 by the first Houston Oilers professional football team, and at the same time began working for Toole and Company where he remained until he and his business partner, Joe Schmid, formed their own company, Environmental Improvements, Incorporated in 1966. He retired in 2004, and in 2007, he was awarded Faculty Fellowship honors at Texas A&M.
In the early 1960’s, he helped form the first local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the Houston Area. Along with his involvement with F.C.A., he served on the boards of The Good Samaritan Foundation, The 100 Club of Houston, the 12th Man Foundation, the Jail Chaplaincy Ministry, and he also was the past President of the Texas Golf Association, the 100 Club of Houston, and Lakeside Country Club. He served as Chairman of the board of Citizen’s Bank of Texas, formerly New Waverly Bank, and Texas Community Bank.
1997, he was the Greater Houston Senior Amateur Champion, and as a member of Lakeside Country Club, he was the Club Champion and four times Senior Club Champion. He was also the past Senior Match Play Golf Champion for the State of Texas. In the Spring of 1998, he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in Waco, Texas.
He was a faithful member of Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he served on the Property Development Committee in 2004. His love for the Lord permeated every detail of his life. He has certainly left his indelible imprint on all our lives.
A memorial service celebrating his life and love for the Lord will be held at Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 8300 Katy Freeway, at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 23, 2022.
