Gerald Need McGown
January 26, 1937 - February 3, 2022 (85 years old)
Gerald Need McGown (Jerry) died in the hospital in Houston, TX on February 3, 2022. He was born in Waco, TX on January 26, 1937 to Gladys and Need McGown. He attended Waco public schools all 12 years and graduated in 1954 from Waco High School. While he was pitching for the Waco Tigers in the spring of 1954, he was given the nickname “Magoo” which followed him to Texas A&M (BS, 1958 where he served as a Yell Leader for two years, UTMB Dental School (DDS 1962, MSD, 1966) and Fort Benning, GA (Captain, US Army Dental Corps, 1962-1964).
He is survived by his wife, Sue Wilson McGown, who is also Waco High School Class of 1954; two sons, Jerry Brian McGown (wife Stacey) of Forney, TX and Patrick Marshall McGown of Boerne, TX; and daughter Jennifer McGown Allen (husband Chris) of Fort Leavenworth, KS.
He is also survived by his “bonus” daughters, Cheryl Hunt Smith (husband Pete) of Tonto Verde, AZ; Kathy Hunt Adkisson (husband Tim) of Milan, TN; and Karen Hunt O’Neal (husband Chris) of McDonough, GA. Jerry and Sue have fourteen grandchildren and four great grand -children and they all love their Poppy!
He is also survived by one brother, Michael Don McGown (wife Kay) and their sons and families.
Jerry loved God, family, America and anything Aggie – in that order. His 1958 classmates are his brothers. He was a long-time supporter of The Association of Former Students of Texas A & M, The Century Club, The Sul Ross Group and The Corps of Cadets Association. He also loved being with people, traveling, playing golf, fishing and serving his dental patients. He practiced pediatric dentistry for over 50 years in Houston, TX (1968-88) and Missouri City, TX (1988-2018) and was very involved in the lives of his patients and their families. He was active in many dental associations: Greater Houston Dental Society, Texas Dental Association, American Dental Association, Pediatric Dental Associations and a small study group still close after over 50 years. Jerry loved and served Grace Presbyterian Church as an elder, deacon, Bible teacher and as the “dentista” for mission trips to Mexico and Honduras.
The Memorial Service will be on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 2:00 in the Founders’ Chapel at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane in Houston, Texas.
