Gerald W. Syler died on Thursday, April 7, 2016, several days after a severe stroke. He was born April 6, 1942, in Sherman, Texas. Upon graduation from Texas A & M University, Gerald served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After completing
his duty, he returned to Texas A & M where he received a master's degree. Gerald spent his entire career with Shell Oil Company, retiring in 2000. He made the most of retirement by following his many passions and interests, including family, friends, art,
travel, wine, world events, and most recently his puppy, Henri. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Zelma Syler, and survived by his brother, Larry Syler. His wife of forty-five years, Nancy, survives him, along with his children and their
spouses: Susan and Mark Shenker, Marty and Wade Chapman, and Gerry and Kelly Syler. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Patrick and Sam Golden, Kate, Grace, Molly, and Jake Chapman, and Olivia and Marlowe Syler. The family wishes to thank the entire
staff at Houston Hospice for their compassionate care which gave Gerald and his family the gift of time for peaceful goodbyes. A private remembrance will be held at a later date, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gerald's honor to Houston Hospice,
