August Joseph Gullo, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Houston, Texas on January 28, 2016.
August, known to all of his friends as "AJ" or "Gus" was a native Houstonian born on April 25, 1924 to Dominic and Jennie Gullo. A.J. was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 52 years, Kathleen Gullo; brother Frank Gullo and sisters Christine Souter and Sadie Clay. He is survived by his children; Julie Napier (Richard), Joan Malek (Hank), Michael Gullo (Paula), David Gullo (Jennifer) and Diane Gullo; his ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. AJ is survived by his brother Anthony Gullo (Dolly) and sisters Catherine Manis and Lena Muchaw, sister in law Mary Gullo, brother in law Mark Luhn (Pat), as well as many nieces and nephews.
AJ attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, San Jacinto High School, and was a member of Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. He graduated from Texas A&M with a major in Economics. He also attended the University of Houston Law School for 2 years.
As a veteran of World War II, he served in the 5th Infantry, Division 45 and 10th Infantry, Division 45. As a young 20 year old, he was assigned to Surgical Technician and Combat Medic. He fought in three major battles in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge and Battle of Metz. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and 2 Overseas Bars. On January 20, 1949, he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserve for a period of 5 years. He was proud of the fact that he earned his pilot license.
AJ started his Business GBC Finance on September 9, 1955 and proudly celebrated 60 years in business. He also found success in real estate investments and partnering with Kathleen in Gullo Antiques. He continued to work until his health declined.
AJ was quite a geography buff. He especially enjoyed chronicling his journeys throughout the United States, Europe, and Islands. He was especially proud of having traveled to all 50 states. Not only did he enjoy vacationing with the love of his life, Kathleen, but also cherished traveling with their many friends, children and grandchildren often times scrapbooking his conquests to share with all.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 2nd of February, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at ten o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 3rd of February, at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 8200 Roos Rd in Houston, where the Rev. Wayne Wilkerson is to serve as the celebrant. Immediately following the mass, all are invited to lunch with the family in the Fellowship Room.
The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at one o'clock in the afternoon to Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, 77038.
