Merlin Ralph Baker
Thursday, 10 August 1944 - Tuesday, 15 December 2015

Merlin Ralph Baker, of County Route 45, Hartford, AL went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, December 15, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was 71.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Enterprise with Rev. Glenn Crumpler and Rev. Donna Cumbie officiating. Burial will follow in the Pondtown United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hartford with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise directing. The family will receive friends on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continuing until service time.

Merlin was born August 10, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa, to the late Rev. Ralph and Chalice Moore Baker. He grew up as a Methodist minister’s son in Northern Iowa. Following high school, he entered the United States Air Force serving from 1965 – 1969 and while stationed in Thailand, he met his wife, Diana. He received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Texas Tech with a Master’s of Industrial Engineering from Texas A & M. He later became employed with the United States Army and for over 30 years worked as an Electronic and Aerospace Engineer. He was very active in his work with and through the United Methodist Church in the Enterprise and Hartford area.

Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to Cattle for Christ, 4125 County Road 636, Enterprise, AL 36330 or Pondtown UMC, 663 Pondtown Road, Hartford, AL 36344.



Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Diana Baker of Hartford; three children: Cynthia Baker of San Diego, CA, Amy Baker Durdin of Enterprise, and Brian Baker and his wife Lou Ann of Cypress, TX; five grandchildren: Robin Lynn Grantham, Justice and Faith Durdin of Enterprise, and Kaylee Baker and Alyssa Tilley of Cypress, TX; sister, Karen Norton of Watertown, NY.
