James Travis Brooks P.E.
James Travis Brooks, 84, died November 4, 2015 in Mulga, AL after a long illness. Travis Brooks was born in Sylacauga, AL on February 2nd, 1931 to Louis Howard Brooks and Eunice Brooks. He attended BB Comer High School and graduated in 1949. After graduation, he volunteered to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean War Era and attained the rank of Sargent while training to be an aircraft mechanic. He met and married Mattie Lois Hill of Haleyville, AL in 1951. After serving in the Air Force, Travis attended Texas A&M University under the GI Bill and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Texas Highway Department's district office in Tyler, TX after graduation and attained his Professional Engineering license while supervising and managing Traffic Engineering operations in ten East Texas counties. Travis went to work for the Federal Highway Administration in Washington, DC in 1966 and went on to develop national traffic engineering standards and specifications for highway signs and pavement markings which are still in use today. During that time, he also received a Master's Degree in Engineering Administration from George Washington University in Washington, DC. He retired from the FWHA in 1994 after 38 years of service and returned to Alabama where he met and married Carlene Winston of Mulga, AL in 2003. He was an active member of the Methodist Church and a Mason. He was also a cat lover and devoted to his pet cat, Rooster. He is survived by his wife Carlene Winston Brooks; son, Robert Travis Brooks; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Weeks Brooks; grandchildren, Aaron Matthew Brooks, Meredith Ashley Brooks, Shannon Leigh Brooks, Kimberly Ann Glover, Savanna Lynn Glover and Jennifer Lee Glover. He is also survived by his sisters, Anne Brooks White and Betty Brooks Loftus, and his brother, Billy Wayne Brooks, as well as his great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Pearson Brooks and Louis Howard Brooks, and his brother, Donald Wood Brooks. A special thanks to Southern Care Hospice and Diane Smith for their loving care during his final days. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 10 to 11 AM at Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga, AL. Chapel Services will be held directly after the viewing at the Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated. Memorial messages may be sent to the family at www.radneysmith.com.
