Horace James Howell Jr.
(November 16, 1918 - October 11, 2015)
U.S. Veteran Horace James (Jim) Howell, Jr. died at Baylor Hospital on October 11, 2015, after a serious car accident. Jim was born November 16, 1918, in Belmont, Texas, to Pearl David and Horace James Howell, Sr. He attended Gonzales High School and graduated
as a chemical engineer from Texas A&M in 1940 at the top of his class. He enlisted in the army after Pearl Harbor and after training at Harvard and M.IT. served in Newfoundland during World War II as a Radar Specialist. After returning to Texas, Jim worked
for Procter and Gamble for more than 25 years. In retirement, Jim was an active options trader and computer enthusiast.
Growing up on a farm, Jim loved the history and countryside of south Texas. He was an avid Texas Aggie fan and for many years had choice seats at Dallas Cowboys’ home games. He spent his entire adult life in Dallas, the last 55 years in Pleasant Grove. He also
lived several years in Mexico City where he managed a Procter & Gamble plant. Jim and his wife Marcie travelled widely in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, usually in his much-loved VW Bug. In his later years, Jim could be found every morning at Rosie’s diner
on Buckner Boulevard with a cup of coffee and the Dallas Morning News.
In a long life of almost 97 years, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, David Ray Howell; three wives, Katherine L. Hurt, Virginia S. Muir, and Marcette M. Howell; four children, Horace James (Jimmy) Howell, III, John Wesley Howell, Judith Ann Howell,
and Jo Ellen Howell Canning. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara H. Seeber; four grandchildren, Amanda Canning, Russell Canning, Jason Molin, and Katherine Norris; two great grandchildren, Casey Dean and Anais Molin; and three nieces, Rebecca Howell, Lisa
Makofski, and Valorie Elkin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 18, 3 p.m., at Troy Suggs Funeral Home, 7623 Military Parkway, Dallas. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Pleasant Mound Cemetery on Buckner Boulevard.
