Lt. Col. James Marsden 'Pete' Jones was called into the loving arms of our Savior Jesus Christ on December 15, 2014. He was 91. Pete was born in Austin, Texas on August 29, 1923 to Henry Houston Jones and Susan Mae Anderson Jones.
Pete was preceded in life eternal by his parents, brother Robert Anderson (Bob) Jones, sister Marguerite Jones (Margie) Gould, his sister-in-law Janet Eaton Saul, his first wife Ruth Eaton Jones, and his second wife Pauline Jones.
Left to cherish his memory are his son James Marsden (Marsha) Jones Jr., daughter Cheryl Ann Jones, step-daughter Julianna Scogin (Mike) Duncan, and step-sons John Edward Foy and John Walter (Aracelia) Scogin. Pete was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth
Jones (Joshua) Haller, Jennifer Kathleen Jones, Nathaniel Marsden (Myranda) Jaye, Alan Kyle Jaye, Christopher Michael (Damean) Duncan, Jamie Anne Duncan (Joshua) Sandoval, Amanda Marie (Pat) Foy, John Hal (Alicia) Foy, Brenda Lee Sanchez (fiancé Brian), and
Tanya Garcia (Gabriel) Vega. From these grandchildren came 18 great-grandchildren: Caleb, Abigail, and David Haller; Caleigh Jones; Parker and Kamdyn Jaye; Christopher, Timothy, and Rylan Duncan; Jace, Jarron, and Jaxen Sandoval; Luke and Owen Foy; Gabriela
and Julian Sanchez, and Jesse Andrade; Zaylen Li Vega. There are four more great-grandchildren on the way, who will be taught everything about their Pawpaw! Also surviving are his close companion Helen Ward, his brother-in-law, best friend, and fishing and
hunting buddy Glen Saul, sister-in-law Marianne Morris Jones, brother-in-law Rev. William M. Gould Jr., and Barry Jaye, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pete grew up in Alice, Texas with his mother and siblings, graduating from Alice High School in 1941. He enrolled at Texas A&M where he was a member of the 'Corps' and the Singing Cadets, 'The Voice of Aggieland!'; however, in 1942 troop trains rolled onto
campus and took the young cadets off to war. Pete served in the European and Pacific theaters, earning many decorations and commendations. After he was discharged from the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant, he returned to A&M and graduated in 1949, forever being
a member of the 'Class of '45.' On August 4, 1950 he married the love of his life Ruth Eleanor Eaton. He went to work for the Texas Highway Department as a civil engineer, where he retired 38 years later. Some of his projects include the Corpus Christi Harbor
Bridge approach ramps, U.S. Highway 181 through Portland, Texas, Crosstown Expressway, and Interstate Highway 37. He was the project engineer for the first phase of what is now known as SPID, from the Crosstown Expressway to just east of Airline Road. During
this time, Pete served in the National Guard, then in the U.S. Army Reserve for over 30 years, earning the rank of lieutenant colonel. His total military service spanned 37 years, including time in the enlisted ranks as a staff sergeant during WWII. Pete was
also an active member of Rotary International for more than 36 years. He enjoyed attending meetings when he traveled internationally and attained the distinction of a perfect attendance record.
Pete became a widower at the age of 53, after nearly 27 years of marriage. He married his wife's best friend, Pauline, who was a recent widow, on March 2, 1978. After retirement, they traveled the world, including a trip to Israel, and enjoyed Corpus Christi
Symphony Orchestra concerts & Harbor Playhouse presentations. Pete and Pauline were also married for 27 years.
Pete grew up in the First Presbyterian Church in Alice, participated in the youth group at the First Presbyterian Church of Corpus Christi, was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian in Corpus Christi where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and choir member. He
became a member of Jackson Woods Presbyterian upon the relocation of Grace, then ended up serving as a member of the Music and Worship Committee, enjoying the food, fellowship, and Bible study in Circle of Joy #3, and singing in the choir at the First Presbyterian
Church of Corpus Christi. His beautiful tenor voice is now among the saints singing praises to our Heavenly Father.
Interment will follow service at Seaside Memorial Cemetery, and then return to the church for refreshments.
Pallbearers will be James Jones Jr., Alan Jaye, William Gould III, Christopher Duncan, David Smith, and Joshua Sandoval.
