Dr. William H. (Henry) Smith of Harrisonburg Va. passed away Jan. 17, 2015 at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was 90 years old.

Dr. Smith was born July 2, 1924 in Charlottesville, Va. and was one of 5 children born to Sallie Harrison Smith and William H. Smith.

He was a longtime large and small animal veterinarian in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area and founded Massanutten Animal Clinic, located on US 33 east of Harrisonburg, in 1955 and operated the practice until his retirement in 1990.

Dr. Smith married Mabel (Mae) Catherine Williams on July 17, 1947, who preceded him in death on August 31, 2013. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Harrison Houston of New Kent, Va. and husband Doug; Patricia Smith Watson of Massanutten and husband James; and two granddaughters, Sally Harrison Houston of Washington, D.C. and Katherine Gilliam Houston of Richmond. A sister, Sally Smith Hoover of Georgia, also survives.

Dr. Smith was a lifelong member of The Brotherhood Bible Class, now the Bible Study Class, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg and the Cross Keys-Mill Creek Ruritan Club. He was also a member of the Civil War Roundtable and the Lake Shenandoah Preservation Association.

Dr. Smith attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Richmond. He was one of two Virginia students selected to attend the School of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A & M, where he graduated in 1954. Soon after, he and wife Mae returned to Virginia and established the Harrisonburg veterinary practice. He later opened a second veterinary clinic on US 340 south, near Elkton, operated by the late Dr. Jeffrey Nester, who later became owner of both practices upon Dr. Smith's retirement.

Dr. Smith was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army in the South Pacific. He was stationed in Fiji and the Philippines.

Dr. Smith's passion was "Back of the Moon," a 100-acre farm near Elkton where he and Mae restored a 19th century two story log home used as a retreat for family and friends. Dr. Smith was an accomplished horticulturist, avid historian, particularly of the Civil War, genealogy researcher of the Smith/Harrison family, and devoted caregiver to Mae.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 23 at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 24 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Hay officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville.
