Edwin Smith, Jr.

Edwin 'Ed' Smith, Jr., age 86, passed away on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013.  He was born Aug. [2]9, 1927, to Leona Thelma Brown and Edwin Forrest Smith, Sr., in Rosenburg.

Growing up, he attended school in Floresville, graduating from high school in 1944. After one year at Texas A&M University, he enlisted in the Navy  Aug. 1, 1945, and served as a Seaman V6 until Aug. 24, 1946. He resumed his studies at Texas A&M University, and graduated with a BSEE degree in 1949.

On May 9, 1951 he re-entered Navy service again. He served on the USS Atka AGB-3 Icebreaker in the Atlantic, and was discharged as LTJG Jan. 1, 1953

On Dec. 24, 1953, he and Rachel Loewen were married in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Tulsa, Okla. His working career was spent as an engineer at various locations and companies in the aerospace industry. He and his wife retired to their farm near Bell Florida, three miles from the Suwannee River, in July 1973, where they lived until his second retirement in March 2003.

Edwin enjoyed life in Alpine, where he spent four or five years building his dream house, which included much wild cherry wood which he transported from his farm in Florida.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Rachel; a cousin, Mildred Bennight; nieces, Rhonda Duerksen, Susan Loewen, Nancy Foster and Gail Cioffe; and three nephews, David Winter, David Loewen and Jack Duerksen.

He was proceeded in death by his parents.
