Francis "Pete" Rozelle Sr. '52 November 26, 2013 10:01 AM

Obituary sent by child

Francis McQueen 'Pete' Rozelle, Sr. died on November 13, 2013 in Norman, Oklahoma after a sudden illness.  He was born June 6, 1932 in Dallas, Texas the only child of Erma Motley Smith and Geo. F. Rozelle, Jr.   He moved with his parents to Boerne, at age 3 on April 21, 1935. They lived and maintained the historic 2 story limestone home and property purchased in 1854 by pioneer Dr. Ferdinand Herff, and now listed on the National Register as the Herff-Rozelle Farm.  He rode his pony Bunny to Balcones School, then a two room schoolhouse with 19 children and two teachers.   He also attended the early Boerne School, Central Catholic in San Antonio and graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1948.

He recalled doing homework by kerosene lantern, as they did not have electricity until 1949.  He spent many wonderful years with his Scottie dogs exploring, fishing, swimming and hunting the Cibolo corridor.   He made his own kayak, with lumber from Bergmann lumber company, to explore the Cibolo Creek and the kayak is still on the farm today, now owned by the Cibolo Nature Center.

Spring and summers were spent helping his parents with chores on their Pioneer Apple Orchard. He was an excellent marksman and a longtime member of the Kruezberg  Schuetzen Verein.  He entered Texas A & M College at age 16 and was member of the Corps of Cadets.  Unlike his father, he turned down a commission to USMA at West Point and chose to continue his education as an Aggie. He earned a double degree in petroleum and geological engineering in 1953.  He was a member of several honor
fraternities: Phi Eta Sigma, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi.  He and his family were members of St. Helena’s Episcopal Church.

He loved fishing, tennis, golf and ranching in addition to oil exploration/production.

He is survived by his children Rita Rozelle Schimpff and husband Herman 'Skip' Schimpff, and Francis McQueen 'Pete' Rozelle, Jr., of San Antonio;  Grandchildren, Carter Wahrmund Schimpff and wife Sarah, of Ft. Worth and Carrie Marie Schimpff of San Antonio.   Also, very special and longtime friend and business associate, Jimi Sparlin, of Dallas.

He continued his fond affiliation with Texas A&M, attending this past year’s muster in April. Memorials may be sent to A&M Association of Former Students   https://www.aggienetwork.com/memorial and St. Helena’s Episcopal Church P.O. Box 1765, Boerne, Texas 78006.
