Roll Call Tribute

Stephan "Steve" Thurman '67 August 29, 2013 10:02 AM

Published in The Washington (D.C.) Post from June 28 to June 30, 2013

STEPHAN S. THURMAN

STEPHAN S. THURMAN
Passed on Monday, June 24, 2013 at home in Falls Church, VA at the age of 67, surrounded by family, of complications from cancer. He is survived by his wife, Laurie Brown; two children, Christopher Thurman of Portland, OR and Jennifer Hodgins of Vancouver, WA; the children's mother, Randy Thurman of Bethesda, MD; one grandchild, Catherine Rose; and many treasured friends. He also leaves his cat, Zoe.

Raised in Indianapolis, IN, Stephan moved to Washington, DC in 1970 to pursue his PhD in economics at The George Washington University. His forty-plus year career as an international economics policy wonk included stints at the Federal Reserve; the Congressional Budget Office; the OECD in Paris, France; and, most recently, the State Department. When not staring into his murky crystal ball, he enjoyed a good glass of wine or single malt Scotch, elegant dinners, telling (often embellished) stories, playing cards, shooting pool, driving his convertible, reading, art, and "anything live" (theater, music, or sports).

Stephan's artistic endeavors covered work in a variety of media including drawing, pewter casting, and glass. An accomplished stained glass artist, he had recently expanded his creativity to fused glass.

He and Laurie enjoyed traveling abroad to attend sporting events including two soccer World Cups (France and South Africa) and the Summer Olympics (Australia). In 2011, they completed their version of a tennis grand slam-attending all four tennis Majors as spectators-with a visit to the hallowed lawns of Wimbledon.

Final arrangements will be conducted privately. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Leave It On The Road (leaveitontheroad.com)-a cross-country bike ride to raise funds and awareness for the fight against colon cancer.
