Roll Call Tribute

Charles "Charlie" Lehman '44 April 21, 2011 9:30 AM

Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Homes, Inc. obituary

Charles E. Lehman
Charles Engblad Lehman was born on January 15, 1924, and passed away peacefully at home in Llano, Texas on April 9, 2011 having enjoyed a robust and meaningful life.

After graduating from Ball High in his hometown of Galveston at the age of 16, Charlie enrolled in Texas A&M University.  During his senior year of college, Charlie and his classmates were called to active duty by the U.S. Army.  While completing his officer training in El Paso in 1944, Charlie met a beautiful young Army nurse named Buena “Mac” McQueen.  Three weeks after they met, Charlie and Mac were married. A few days after their marriage, both received orders to ship out to Europe, where they served until the end of World War II. Despite their brief courtship, the marriage lasted over 62 years, until Mac died in 2007.

The young couple returned from the war, Charlie finished his college courses, graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in accounting, and went to work for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Houston.  Mac gave up her nursing career to raise their two daughters and make a home for their family through many job related relocations.  They made many lifelong friends during Charlie’s professional career in Harlingen, Beaumont, Dallas and Chicago, and in retirement at Sun City, Texas, before moving to Llano in 2006 to be closer to their daughters.

Charlie began as a traveling auditor for Sears Roebuck in South Texas, and was promoted to the home office of the company in Chicago in 1958 to be a part of the team overseeing construction of the Sears Tower.  He was later instrumental in guiding Sears into the age of computers.

Like so many of his generation, Charlie grew up during the Great Depression, came of age during World War II and returned from the war to live a humble life of honor, service, and love of family and country.

Charlie is survived by daughter, Sheri Lehman of Llano; daughter and son in law Jodi and Jim Babcock of Horseshoe Bay and special friend and second love of his life, Claudine Weber of Llano.  He worshiped at the First Baptist Church in Llano where he made many caring friends who greatly enriched Charlie’s life.  Charlie was a dedicated fan of the educational programs and welcoming warmth of the Llano County Library.

A Funeral Service celebrating his long and happy life will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Waldrop-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel in Llano with Reverend Rick Cundieff officiating. Burial will follow at the Llano City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charlie’s honor to the Llano County Library, 102 W. Haynie, Llano, Texas 78643.
