A.J. Banister, 96, of Amarillo died Friday, May 14, 2010.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St.

A.J. Banister was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Mount Pleasant. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1938 with an agricultural science degree.

Mr. Banister taught high school in Cookville. He married Opal Reeves on June 1, 1941. She preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2007.

He moved to Amarillo in 1943 and opened a grocery business. He was one of the first stockholders of Affiliated Foods. Mr. Banister was a member of the Khiva Shrine Temple and a longtime member of First Baptist Church.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Verna Mae Palermo.

Survivors include three sons, Andy Banister and wife Lorinne of Indianapolis, Jon A. Banister and wife Gina of Richardson and Scott Banister and wife Susan of Bowling Green, Ky.; a daughter, Donna Banister Miller of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or a favorite charity.
