SAN ANGELO Cheryl Hines, 55, passed away on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at her residence in San Angelo. Honoring her wishes, a private service for the immediate family was held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010. Cheryl was born Feb. 14, 1955, in Colorado City, Texas, to
Bass and Hontas Hines.
A 1973 graduate of Colorado High School, she obtained her bachelor of science in elementary education from Angelo State University in 1976. She began her teaching career at Hermleigh ISD and later taught in the Colorado ISD and Bryan ISD.
In addition to being a classroom teacher, Cheryl enjoyed teaching dance and twirling to many students during her early years. Always the teacher, Cheryl eventually hung up her tap shoes, put down her batons and embarked on a career in higher education.
Cheryl received a doctorate in education from Texas A&M University in 1995, specializing in reading and
children's literature. She was a professor of education at the University of Houston-Victoria, becoming chair of the education division in 1996.
Returning to Angelo State University as professor of education in 1999, Cheryl received "Professor of the Year" and the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 2003. She was always eager to share her passion for children's literature and reading education
with her students.
While living in Victoria, Cheryl took up golf and enjoyed many afternoons on the course with friends. She was a proud member of the Bentwood Ladies Golf Association prior to her illness.
An avid traveler, Cheryl was the director of UHV's International Study Abroad Program for several years, organizing and leading many student trips to Europe.
Survivors include her mother, Hontas Hines of Colorado City; brother Charles Hines of Austin; sister Debbie Hines of Grapevine; uncle Don Hines and family of Midland; and numerous cousins.
