Kermit Earl Brown, 1923 - 2009
Kermit Earl Brown was born November 2, 1923 in Haskell, Texas to John Wesley Brown and Mary Grosman Brown and died December 10, 2009 in Tulsa, OK.
Kermit was married to Rubeye Katherine Bunkley on Thanksgiving day 1945 after serving honorably as a reconnaissance pilot in Europe in World War II. Kermit and Katherine were married for 64 years and had four children together, Steve, Sandra Kay, Mike and David.
Kermit was a first and foremost a scholar and a teacher. After Paint Creek High School in Texas he attended John Carleton Junior College before joining the Army Air Corp. After the war ended he finished a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a
second Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering, both at Texas A&M. He worked professionally with Stanolind Oil and Gas, and Garret Oil Tool Company after his graduation, and then returned to school at the University of Texas where he taught and earned
his M.S. and Ph.d. in Engineering.
After teaching at the University of Texas, Kermit joined the faculty of the University of Tulsa as professor and Chairman of the Department of Petroleum Engineering in 1966 and Associate Dean, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He served as Vice-President
of the University of Tulsa for Research before returning to full-time teaching.
Kermit was a ground-breaking researcher and writer in the field of gas-lift technology. He wrote 7 books and numerous articles in the area of Petroleum engineering. During his career he received numerous awards for his teaching and his work including the John
Franklin Carll lifetime achievement award from the Society of Petroleum Engineering in 1983. He was named a Fulbright Lecturer in 1971, and was made a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering in 1987, named Outstanding Alumnus of the Texas
A&M College of Engineering (2001), and a member of the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2004. Just this fall the Society of the Petroleum Engineering named Kermit as one of "The Legends of the Industry" in the latest Journal of Petroleum Technology.
The teaching award in the College of Engineering at the University of Tulsa is named the "Kermit E. Brown Award for Teaching Excellence" in honor of Kermit.
Kermit is survived by his wife, Katherine, his sons, Steve and his wife, Peggy; his daughter, Sandra Kay Paschal and her husband, Wade; his son, Mike and his wife, Lisa; and his son, David, and his grandchildren, Stephen Brown, Bryan Brown, Trey Paschal, Katy
Paschal Fulda, Nikola Paschal, Jessica Brown, Melissa Brown and Michelle Brown, and his great-grandchildren Brianna Brown, Cody Brown and McKinna Brown, his step-great granddaughter, Michelle Lyon and a great-great grandson, Noah Daniel Lyon.
A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist of Tulsa at 2 pm on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers gifts may be sent in Dr. Brown's honor to the University of Tulsa Kermit E. Brown Petroleum Engineering Honors Scholarship Program.
