STILLWATER, Okla. — Dr. Bryan Pettigrew Glass of Stillwater, Okla., died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at the age of 91.

His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at University Heights Baptist Church at 323 S. Knoblock in Stillwater. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Strode Funeral Home.

 Dr. Glass was an active member, deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years at First Baptist Church in Stillwater. He also was elected second vice president of the Oklahoma Baptist Convention in 1988 and was on the organizing board for Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Oklahoma.

Dr. Glass was born Aug. 21, 1919, to Dr. Wiley B. Glass and Jessie Pettigrew Glass in Mandeville, La. The son of foreign missionaries, Dr. Glass grew up in China. He attended Baylor University, where he received a BA degree, an MS degree at Texas A&M, and a Ph.d at OSU. He was a professor of zoology
and director of the OSU Museum until his retirement in 1985.  He and the former Carolyn Smith were married Aug. 24, 1946, in College Station, Texas.

Dr. Glass was listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest, as well as Who's Who in America and American Men of Science. He was the executive secretary-treasurer of the American Society of Mammalogists for 20 years and received the Jackson Award for outstanding service to that organization. He was the pre-med adviser at OSU for many years and was selected the OSU Outstanding Teacher in 1966.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his late wife, Carolyn Smith Glass, as well as one brother, H. Bentley Glass, three sisters, Lois C. Glass, Eloise G. Cauthen and Trudy G. Chang.

He is survived by two daughters, Janis G. Burger and her husband, Dr. Gary Burger, of Stillwater, and Peggy G. Matlock and her husband, Dr. Randy Matlock, of Oklahoma City; two grandsons, Thomas Joseph Bryan Burger of Edmond and Marshall Steele Matlock of Kansas City, Mo.; two granddaughters, Ellen Burger Riley and husband Captain Gregory “Tuck” Riley of Westampton, N.J., and Dr. Rebecca Matlock Burt and husband Jeremy Burt of Oklahoma City; and one great-grandson, Brooks Wiley Burt.  Also niece Mary Paul Gregory and husband Mike Gregory of Edmond; Michael Clay Gregory and wife Betsy and their children Sam and Avery of Bartlesville. He is also survived by niece Dr. Lois Glass Edgar of Boulder, Colo., and nephew Ralph Cauthen and wife Jane of Greensboro, N.C., and numerous other great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Red Bud Assisted Living Center in Perkins for their outstanding care and love for “Doc” Glass.
