Following a processional, a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Saint Theresa Catholic Church, 705 Saint Theresa Blvd. in Sugar Land. Robert Frank Schumann, 85, was born July 29, 1924, to Max Albert Schumann and Anna Muehr, and passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Robert was born in the family home on Fourth Street in Sugar Land. At 3 years, his mother died and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Hattie Greenbaum Schwartz. As a child, he delivered the newspaper on his bicycle. Cattle have always been a part of his life, and in school he was the only member of his school's 4-H club. He showed the grand champion steer at the Fort Bend County Fair in 1939 and showed cattle at the Houston Fat Stock Show. Robert loved his hometown of Sugar Land and was a 1941 graduate of Sugar Land High School. He was the loudest and proudest member of the fightin' Texas Aggie class of 1945. At Texas A&M, every member of his class enlisted on the same day, and he was a member of the 65th Infantry Division. He fought on the European front in World War II. Upon graduation, he served as ranch foreman for his uncle Paul Schumann's ranch, which he continued farming and ranching after Paul Schumann's death in 1968. He continued farming and ranching operations for the land until his death. He married Alice Pisklak on June 9, 1956, in his cowboy boots at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg. The two moved into his uncle's farmhouse on FM 1464, where they raised their six children: Debbie, Becky, Tim, Sandy, Kathy and Jeff. Robert was a charter member of Saint Theresa Catholic Church and he never missed a church service. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Saint Basil Council 4204 as he served as the Grand Knight from 1957 to 1959, and charter member of Bishop Morkovsky Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 2243. Robert worked as a plant supervisor for Hou-Tex Fan and Machinery in the 1970s and started his own tree-digging business. He grew many of the trees on his land out of acorns he had planted. He was a lifetime member of the Fort Bend County Fair Association and was actively involved in the Fort Bend County Farm Bureau. He was active in several farming conventions and was a constant champion for farmers and ranchers. He was involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In 2003, he was presented with the Aggie Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fort Bend County A&M Club. His Internet was the daily newspaper thrown the old-fashioned way. He was an avid newspaper reader and loved driving his Gator. Two weeks before his death, he fought to save historic trees on his land and was featured on local television news. He loved farming, loved talking to people, loved Sugar Land, loved Texas A&M, loved the Knights of Columbus, and loved his family more than anything. He died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. Robert is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Alice; parents and stepmother; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Frances Schumann; brother, Lawrence Schumann; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Ben Tydlacka, and Dorothy and Taylor Richie. Robert is survived by his children: Debbie and Keith Brooks of College Station, Becky and Ron Braeuer of Moulton, Tim Schumann of Sugar Land, Sandy and Glenn Turner of Sugar Land, Kathy and Ted Neuland of Magnolia, and Jeff and Stephanie Schumann of Richmond; grandchildren: Richard Brooks, Joseph, Colleen and Pamela Maxey, Nick Turner and wife, Kathleen Turner, Cameron Turner, Meghan Neuland, and Jordan and Sara Schumann; great-grandchild: Cole Pilat and an expected new arrival in September; brothers Max Schumann and wife, Dorothy, of Midland, and William Schumann and wife, Dolores, of New Braunfels; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Anna Pausewang. Arrangements are under the direction of Hernandez Funeral Home, 800 Fourth St. in Rosenberg, 281-342-8803. Copyright © 2010 - Fort Bend Herald
