Harold Gibson Jr.
Funeral services for retired Army Maj. Gen. Harold B. Gibson Jr.,79, of Odenton, will be held at noon today at the Post Chapel on Fort George G.Meade.
Maj. Gen. Gibson died of cardiac arrest March 5 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimoreafter a brief illness.
Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Fort Riley, Kan., he graduated from West End High Schoolin Nashville, Tenn., and attended Texas Agricultural and Mechanical Universitybefore enlisting in the Army in March 1943. He subsequently attended the ParisCenter of the University
of Maryland and Syracuse University, earning a master's degree in business administration.
After being commissioned as an engineer officer at Fort Belvoir, Va., he servedin New Guinea, Biak island, the Philippines, and Japan until 1946. He thenbecame a regular Army ordnance officer.
Among his responsibilities were implementing Marshall Plan provisioning ofordnance material to the French Army, coordinating a program for outfitting andproviding materiel to the South Vietnamese Army and a tour as chief of staff ofthe Army's Tank-Automotive
Command.
Later he was commander of Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa., commanding officer of the U.S. Support Command in Saigon, and commander of theArmy Materiel Command in Germany.
Subsequently he was commander of the Army Theater Army Support Command in Europe. In his last two postings, he was director of maintenance for the Army Materiel Command and later served as its chief of staff.
He received the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Army's Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Following retirement in 1977, he was project manager and later vice president of Frank E. Basil Inc., a worldwide diversified services firm providing support for the military. He retired again in 1989.
He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars and the Fort Meade Post Chapel. In 1996, he was inducted into the Army's Ordnance Hall of Fame at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Edgewood.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Arlena Dalton Gibson; one son, Maurice D. Gibson of Dillsburg, Pa.; three daughters, Christina N. De La Rosa of Odenton, Robin Gibson Weber of Savannah, Ga., and Cathryne Gibson Olevnik of Canton, Mich.; 13 grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Harold B. Gibson III.
Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
Arrangements are by Singleton Funeral Home in Glen Burnie.
