DANIEL GRAFTON BELL At age 98, Deacon, as he was known to his family and friends, died peacefully in Santa Fe on October 9. He was born in Hereford, Texas, the son of Allan Grafton Bell and Lena Rivers Daniel. He is survived by his younger brother, Charles Austin Bell; his son, Alan Edward Bell; daughter, Beverly Ann Busching; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In 1925 he graduated from Texas A & M University in Electrical Engineering, and worked in the movie theatre business until the late 1950s when he left to pursue business interests in Arizona with his wife, Bennie Belle. As a young man, he greatly enjoyed participating in the development of sound film technology. He served with the armed forces during World War II, training anti-aircraft gunners and maintaining the radar defenses of Hawaii. Deacon and his wife were lifelong orchid growing enthusiasts. They participated actively in national and international conferences and exhibits, and were widely known as knowledgeable experts. He is lovingly remember by his family and friends for his gentle wisdom, his adventurous spirit, and his pursuit of wide-ranging interests, including mineralogy, woodworking, stone sculpture, desert plant life, jewelry making, and cooking. A memorial service will be held in Phoenix on October 26. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs Scholarship Fund, noted 'scholarship in memory of Deacon Bell.' Send care of Wilella Stimmell, 6047 E.
