Gene Nelson, 77, of Anahuac, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston. Funeral services will be held at 10 Am, Friday, June 13, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Anahuac with burial following at Anahuac Cemetery in Anahuac. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. Gene was born November 26, 1925 in Graydon to parents; Oscar F. and Maggie Lee Heathman Nelson and has resided in the Anahuac area throughout his lifetime. He was a graduate of the Anahuac High School class of 1943, obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Physical education from Texas A&M University in 1948, a retired rice farmer, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anahuac Chamber of Commerce, past President of the American Rice Growers, former Anahuac ISD Board of Trustees member, member of the Chambers/Liberty Co. Navigation District, and Charter member of the Day Break
Sunday School Class. Gene also enjoyed deer hunting, flower gardening, his yard work, and his community. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Nina Belle ‘Gaggie' Lester Nelson, and brothers: Oscar Nelson, Jr., Robert Nelson, and Roy Nelson. He is survived by his daughter: Louise Nelson Herrington and husband Allen of Anahuac, sons: Don Nelson and wife Debbie of Ingram and Jim Nelson and wife Leslie of Anahuac, sister: Margie Thames and husband Louis of Anahuac, sister-in-law: LaVerne Nelson of The Woodlands, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In lieu of usual floral remembrances the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church at 405 S. Magnolia; Anahuac, TX 77514, in Gene's name.
