Joseph Charles Blackshear
GALVESTON - Joseph Charles Blackshear, age 75, a beloved husband and father/passed away on Monday, September 16,
2002.
Mr. Blackshear, a prominent businessman and civic leader, was born in Galveston, Texas, on December 21, 1926. He grew up in Galveston and graduated from Ball High School, and was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, class of 1947, where he received a bachelor
of science in Business degree.
Mr. Blackshear joined Seinsheimer Insurance Agency in 1950. He became a partner in 1952, and participated
in the purchase of 10 insurance agencies, with offices in Galveston, Sugarland and Houston. The agency later became Blackshear Insurance Agency. During this time he served as a director of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas. In addition to being a prominent
insurance agent,
Mr. Blackshear was also a civic leader.'He served on the Galveston City Council from 1965 to 1969, and was vice chairman of the Planning Committee. He was a director of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, Galveston Savings and Loan Association, University National
Bank, Galveston Rotary Club, Galveston Country Club, and the William Temple Foundation.
Mr. Blackshear served as President of the Galveston Insurance Board, Galveston Artillery Club, and Trinity Episcopal School, where he was Chairman of the Episcopal Expansion Fund. In 1997, he was honored by the Society to Prevent Blindness with the Teople of
Vision' award. He currently served as a director of the Sealy-Smith Foundation Board. A long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, he served as vestry member and senior warden.
Mr. Blackshear is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Helen Murray Blackshear; brothers, Jack Ligon Blackshear and wife Hildegarde, andArvil Harrel Blackshear and wife Bette; his children, Janet Carolyn Blackshear, Joseph Charles Blackshear and wife Rochelle,
John Murray Blackshear and wife Faye, and Mary Margaret Dean and husband Charles; ten grandchildren; and his
brother-in-law Robert Moore Murray and wife Patricia.
He was .preceded in death by his parents, Maggie Ligon and Arvil Hurt Blackshear, his sister Margaret Blackshear
Springer and husband Benjamin, and his nephew Robert Moore Murray, Jr..
Graveside service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas, with a 9:30 a.m. departure from J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home Chapel.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Ronald Pogue and Father John Donovan officiating. A reception will follow in Eaton Hall.
Pallbearers will be William C. Blackshear, Steven M. Murray, Alan H. Blackshear and Justin B. Rekoff.
