Maj Douglas Lee Shankles
Birth: Mar. 2, 1932
Death: Jan. 14, 2004
Douglas Lee Shankles was born in Grayson County, Texas, the son of the late Lee Musgrove Shankles and Lula Margarite (Kretsinger) Shankles. He died at his home in Sherman, Texas.
He was a graduate of Southmayd High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Range Management from Texas A&M, College Station, Texas.
A career Military Officer, Doug served in the Air Force during the Korea conflict and Vietnma War earning amongst other citations, the Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters. He retired in 1973 with the rank of Major.
He was also a Cattle Rancher.
Doug married Mary Harp on May 27, 1992 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Sherman where he was a member. He was also a member of the Air Force Officers Club and the Texas A&M Alumni.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Miss Betty Shankles.
Left to cherish his memories, he was survived by his wife of Sherman; brother, James M Shankles & his wife Bobbie of Sherman; children, Lisa Shankles Hensarling of Atlanta, Georgia, Carolyn Shankles Vines of Fairfax, Virginia, Karla Shankles of Parker, Colorado,
Kathryn Shankles Walterscheid & husband David of Parker, Colorado, Susan J. Shankles of Austin, Texas, Jamie J. Lawrence & wife Stephanie of Ft Lewis, Washington, Robert Lee Lawrence & wife Traci of Austin, Texas, Jackie S. Brooks & husband Chris of Allen,
Texas, and Barbara McMurray & husband Jason of Sherman; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Waldo Funeral Chapel, the Reverend James Sproat of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, officiating.
