Roane M. Lacy, Sr. '37, 92, of Waco died June 21, 2009. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS California and later as gunnery officer on the USS Tennessee before and after Pearl Harbor and at the Battle of Midway in the Pacific theater. As a naval aviator he was a patrol plane commander, flying the PBY Catalina. He was discharged as a lieutenant commander in 1945. He worked in various capacities with Citizens National Bank of Waco as a vice president and director until 1955, when he bought the W.D. Lacy Coal Co. founded by his grandfather in 1882. He transformed the company into a feed manufacturing and distribution company, and later into a vertically integrated turkey meat products company employing more than 1,800 people. Plantation Foods, Inc. marketed cooked turkey products nationally and internationally. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; a son; a daughter, Helen C. (Lacy) Bryan '79; five grandchildren; a step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence C. Lacy '40; and a sister.
