Roll Call Tribute

Mina Brees '72 August 17, 2009 12:00 AM

Mina R. Akins Brees '72, 59, of Austin (formerly of San Marcos and Portland) died Aug. 7, 2009. She received a doctorate in law from Southern Methodist University in 1979 and began a legal career in Dallas. She moved in the mid-1980s to Austin, where she worked in several firms and as a sole practitioner. She was program manager, adjunct professor and attorney for the University of Texas School of Law's Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution from 1995 to 1997 and served on the State Bar board of directors from 2001 to 2004. She had returned less than a month before her death from Kiev, Ukraine, where she received a Fulbright scholar grant to teach dispute resolution at Taras Schevchenko National University. Survivors include her husband of one year, Daniel E. Sowada; two sons; her parents; a brother; a sister; and a grandchild.
