Terry L. Yates '75, 57, of Placitas, N.M. (formerly of Mayfield, Ky.) died Dec. 11, 2007 of brain cancer. He worked for several years at the National Science Foundation. He joined the University of New Mexico's biology department in 1978. He served as UNM's vice president for research from 2001 to the present. His groundbreaking research on the source of hantavirus during a fatal outbreak in the Southwest in 1993 helped track down its cause and transmission. The National Science Foundation named his hantavirus research, done with a collaborator, as one of the 50 NSF projects that have had the biggest impact on the lives of Americans. He was named an honorary member of the Society of Mammalogists in 2007, that society's highest honor, and was awarded UNM's Regents Meritorious Service Award, also in 2007. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Nancy (Fennell) Yates '74, and two sons, including Brian C. Yates '99.
