Robert Timme '62 April 19, 2007 12:00 AM

Robert W. Timme '62, 66, of Orlando, Florida and Victoria) died April 5, 2007 of complications associated with chemotherapy. He served in the U.S. Army and later worked at NASA where he was instrumental in the manned spacecraft and lunar research for the Apollo program. He received a Ph.D. in physics from Rice University in 1971. He moved to Orlando in 1971 and was a director at the Naval Research Laboratory where he worked from 1971-79. He was a U.S. treaty negotiator for the Department of Defense in 1988 responsible for advising the Secretary of State on international export control for underwater technology. He was known for his publications on the development and reliability of underwater acoustic transducers. He was a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and held several patents. He was awarded the Outstanding Navy Civilian Service Award in 1987, the highest award given to a civilian by the U.S. Department of Defense. He was a rancher in Victoria in retirement and spent time at his home in Orlando and on his ranch in Victoria. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sharon; two daughters, Leslie K. Timme MacGregor '88 and Karen D. Timme Michlewicz '90; and two grandchildren.
