Association support helps engineering student graduate debt-free

Mechanical engineering student Lauren Chamberlain ’26 represents the lasting impact of former student support on student success. Raised by a single mother, Chamberlain grew up understanding the meaning of sacrifice and the value of graduating without debt.

“My mom worked incredibly hard to make sure I could go to college debt-free,” Chamberlain said.

Thanks to a scholarship awarded by The Association of Former Students, Chamberlain is on track to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees without the weight of student loans. The support from former students has not only eased financial burdens but also given her the freedom to take advantage of extracurricular activities.

Chamberlains started a Bible study with other students from her dorm, Mosher Hall, as a freshman. The group, now around 30 students, has continued to remain a core part of her college experience as many of those friendships have grown beyond campus life.

Scholarship support has also created opportunities for connection and belonging. From forming a close-knit community in her first week on campus to building lasting friendships that extend beyond college, Lauren has been able to fully engage in the Aggie experience.

"Now we’re all in each other’s weddings this summer," Chamberlain said laughing.

Instead of working multiple jobs to cover expenses, Chamberlain is able to maintain a rigorous academic schedule, taking 18 hours per semester, while pursuing leadership opportunities. She is involved in the College of Engineering honors community, participates in the Zachry Leadership Program and leads a second

Chamberlain said that these experiences have allowed her to grow as both a student and a leader, while also mentoring others along the way.

Because of support The Association Chamberlain has been able to make school her biggest priority, something her mom always emphasized.

"My mom always told me that while I’m in school, school is my full-time job," Chamberlain said.

As Chamberlain prepares to graduate in May and begin her career in mechanical engineering, she is also stepping into a new season of life with her fiancé Andrew Schonhoff ’25.

“Not having student debt will help us start this next chapter on a strong foundation,” Chamberlain said.

Scholarships awarded to high achieving students like Chamberlain not only ignite a spark to pursue higher education but also teach students the power of generosity in supporting the generation to come.

"Scholarships made such a difference in my life,” Chamberlain said. “I would love to support other students the same way someday."
