Mark Edward Homer, DVM

January 16, 1958 - November 5, 2025

Dr. Mark Edward Homer, DVM, passed on November 5, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children, at the age of 67. Born on January 16, 1958, in Fremont, California, to Edward and Joyce Homer, he was the oldest of two children. His family relocated to Dallas when he was in elementary school. Mark was born with a passion for animals. As a child he maintained a menagerie of lizards, snakes, turtles and a chinchilla. Always an entrepreneur, he started his own lawn mowing business at the age of 10. Around this time, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, but he never let this disease deter him from reaching his goals and dreams. He was a proud Eagle Scout and earned 2 silver palms before the age of 18.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science in 1980 from Texas A&M University in College Station and then firmly set his heart on becoming a veterinarian. He proudly accomplished his dream when he graduated from Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. After graduation, Mark accepted a job as an associate veterinarian in San Antonio. However, his dream was to open his own practice; a dream he fulfilled in 1990, when he opened Southeast Animal Hospital. His practice continues to serve San Antonio's southeast side 35 years later.

He was a classic car enthusiast and a lover of art - it gave him joy to collect both. Mark was a man of determination and grit working through various health challenges during his life, some of which included: his childhood diabetes, a quadruple bypass, dialysis secondary to diabetes, and then he had a remarkable recovery after receiving a double transplant (kidney and pancreas) in 2003, the 22-year milestone he celebrated days before his passing. No matter his health condition, he could not be kept away from his patients and hospital! He would always return to his work sooner than his healthcare team advised. His love and commitment to his patients and staff carried him through life and gave him endless joy and fulfillment. He would have continued practicing medicine for another 35 years if his health had allowed. Southeast Animal Hospital will continue Mark's passion for providing veterinary care to its community. There was no place on earth he loved and cherished more than Southeast Animal Hospital, although his farm in Kansas was a close second. Mark will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, sense of humor, and his busy brain. With a dog by his side, he was always thinking, planning, drawing out his next dream and writing his ideas down in his stacks of notebooks.

Mark is survived by his wife, Denise and his children, Matthew (Erin) and Sarah (Brad) and grandchildren, Evelyn, Julia and Alfred. He is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Joyce. The community is invited to join his family in a celebration of his life and accomplishments.
