Alvin Wayland "Al" Jones, MG USA (Ret) 

September 14, 1930 - September 4, 2025 

Major General Alvin W. Jones (Ret) was born in Harlingen, Texas on September 14, 1930 and passed away on September 4, 2025 in Bryan, Texas.

Al was one of five children born to Clara Lee (Savage) and Larue Jones. He graduated from Lewisville High School in 1948. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from North Texas State University in 1952, as well as a Master's in Education Administration from Texas A&M University in 1966.

Al and his wife Ann married in 1957 and began a life together that spanned an adventure filled 68 years. They were blessed with two sons, Tim and Terry, who shared those times with them.

Al enlisted in the United States Army in 1952 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1953 from the Engineer Officer Candidate School. He served his country as a Corps of Engineer Officer in Korea and Guam from 1953-1955.

Following his time on active duty, Al continued his service to the country in the US Army Reserves from 1955-1991, enjoying a very successful military career due to his leadership abilities. He was promoted through the ranks during those years serving in multiple command positions.

-Commander of 871st Engineer Battalion (Lt. Col) Austin, TX, 1974-1978.

-Commander of 493rd Engineer Group (Colonel) Dallas, TX, 1980-1983.

-Commander of 420th Engineer Brigade (Brigadier General) Bryan, TX, 1983-1987.

-Commander of 377th Theater Army Command (Major General) New Orleans, LA, 1987-1991.

During his career he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.

Professionally, Al worked for the Engineering Extension Service, Texas A&M University, from 1957-1989, retiring as Division Head Emeritus.

Following his professional and military retirement, Al continued to serve his community by successfully running for Brazos County Judge, serving two terms in that position from 1995-2002.

After his retirement from political service, Al spent his time enjoying his family and his many friends, who he would tell you blessed him. He enjoyed hunting and especially fishing with his good friend Keith Ginsel on Lake Limestone. He also spent a good bit of time working and playing at his beloved ranch "Liberty," where he passed from this world, which was his hope and an answered prayer, although so difficult for those of us left behind.

Al was preceded in death by his parents Larue and Clara Jones along with his brother Larue (Sonny), and sisters Sara (Minee), Shirley (Chick) and Dorothy (Dot). He was also preceded in death by his son Terry Jones.

He is survived by his wife Ann Jones, son Tim and his wife Marion Jones, daughter-in-law Billie Jean Jones, brother-in-law Robert Holloway and wife Karen. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Virginia Babcock (Michael), Courtney Le (Long), Nichole Reilly (Kyle), Christina Loeffler (Colin), Elizabeth Terrell (Jason) and Jordan Jones (Louisa), twelve great-grandchildren, nephew, nieces and extended family.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 10 a.m. at College Station City Cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to attend as they say a final farewell and lay Al to rest.
