Roll Call Tribute

Milburn Dearing '70 May 21, 2025 3:32 PM updated: May 21, 2025 3:44 PM

Milburn Walter Dearing

September 18, 1941 - May 1, 2024

He was born on September 18, 1941 to Walter and Cora Dearing in Fredericksburg, Texas. He spent his early childhood in Cherry Spring, Texas and attended Cherry Spring School in the 1st grade. The family moved closer to Fredericksburg where he graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1959 and earned a football scholarship to Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, Texas. Returning to Fredericksburg, he worked for Stroeher and Son for several years, during which time he met his future wife, Laverne. He did time in the Ready Army Reserves of the United States, at Fort Polk, with Company B, 871 Construction Engineers, and received an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant after expiration of his term of service in 1969.

In 1966 Milburn entered Texas A&M University for the Special-Wildlife Science Course for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. After graduating from Texas Game Warden Academy, he married the love of his life, Laverne Pfeiffer Dearing on July 9th, 1966. They were stationed in Odessa Texas. During their time there, he worked in Crane, Ector, Loving, Ward, and Winkler Counties of Texas. A job opening in Kendall County allowed them to move to Boerne in March of 1967 where they remained to live and raised four children. Milburn was the only Game Warden in Kendall County from 1967 to 1982, when he was joined in the same service by Ron Bennett, stationed in Comfort, Kendall County, who became one of his dearest friends.

One of his most unusual experiences was the appearance of a huge black bear in the Boerne area. He, and then Sheriff Glenn White, were supposed to handle the situation and get rid of it, as ranchers were concerned for their livestock. After several sightings and tracking, the two got the opportunity to get a few shots off to attempt to scare it away, and in time the bear looked for another area to find some peace.

Mr. Dearing has earned the Master Peace Officer certificate and the Civil Process Proficiency Certification. He volunteered with Kendall County EMS as an intermediate EMT, instructor and examiner. He received the EMT of the year award in 1990 from the Boerne Kiwanis Club. He worked for Security One and provided security for weddings and family gatherings in Kendall County.

Milburn enjoyed hunting and fishing and sharing his passions for the outdoors. For many years he played adult baseball in Fredericksburg and Boerne. Through his years as game warden he taught the Hunter Safety Course to more than 500 students of all ages to help them earn their Hunter Safety Certifications. He gave his time to school and scouting projects.

After 35 years of service, Milburn retired from the Texas Parks and Wildlife as a sergeant game warden in 2002. Soon afterwards he was appointed the Precinct 2 Constable by the Kendall County Commissioners Court, and in March of that year was sworn into office. He remained constable until December of 2015. He performed bailiff duties in all justice courts and also delivered papers for out of county courts as well as papers from local lawyers. He was certified as a civil process server through the Judicial Branch Certification Commission security officer through the Texas Department of Public Safety.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Laverne Dearing. Children: Darrel Dean, twins Dennis Dale and Denise Deanne Dearing, Danette Schweers (Roy) and grandchildren Frank, Elizabeth and John Schweers. Sister Carolyn Carson, Brothers Willard Dearing and Delbert Dearing (Kaye Lynn) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Cora Dearing and a sister Agnes Dearing.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 13th at 1:00pm at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Boerne, Texas followed by a reception with light refreshments in the church Cana Ballroom.
