Alonzo Wood III '83 May 5, 2025 4:02 PM updated: May 5, 2025 4:09 PM

Alonzo Church Wood, III

July 10, 1940 - July 19, 2024

Funeral services for Alonzo Church Wood, III, 84, of Lexington, Texas are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday July 24, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Lexington. Burial will follow in the Lexington City Cemetery.

Alonzo was born on July 10, 1940 in Galveston, Texas to Alonzo Jr. and Kate (Hester) Wood. Alonzo loved learning, evidenced by degrees from the University of Texas, Southwestern Theological Seminary, TCU and attending Texas A&M University. His greatest achievement, though, was being a student of the Bible and growing in his relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Alonzo married the love of his life Beverly Gay Ward on June 21, 1963 in Amarillo, Texas. To this union they were blessed with two daughters, Gena Gay and Jana Joy. Alonzo worked as a school administrator for school districts in Lexington, College Station, and Giddings. After retiring from his education profession, he became the education liaison for Representative and good friend Tim Kleinschmidt and was a legislative aide for Representative John Cyrier. He retired from State employment in 2021. Alonzo traces his family history all the way back to 1856 when his ancestors moved from Germany and settled in Lexington. He himself has lived in Lexington for 43 years and is very proud of his family history. He was an Eagle Scout, leader of the Lee County Republican Party, faithful member of the Thursday night men’s bible study, and the worship leader at First Baptist Church in Lexington. Alonzo was a man of many hobbies; he was a true outdoorsman enjoying canoeing, bird watching, and was even a wilderness guide in Canada for a time. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading, and learning as much about history as he could. He was a true craftsman but above all he was a devoted husband and father.

Alonzo passed away the afternoon of Friday, July 19, 2024 at his home in Lexington with this family by his side. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Alonzo C. Wood Jr. and Kate Rebecca Hester Wood.

Alonzo is survived by his wife of 61 years Beverly Wood of Lexington; two daughters, Gena and husband Kevin Conner of Lexington, Jana and husband Hal Jones of Florida; one grandson, Christian Conner of Lexington, one step sister, Janet and husband Nathan Barns of Bertram; cousin, Dick Hester of Houston; step-mother Adelle Wood of Burnet, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael D’Antonio, Tim Kleinschmidt, David Skeahan, Al Herrera, Darren Orsag, and Gary Pietsch.

Arrangements made by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home Giddings.
