John Louis Schattel, Sr.

November 13, 1935 - April 20, 2025

John Louis Schattel was born in Houston, Texas on November 13, 1935, to Mary Ann Leskovjan and Anthony George Schattel. He passed away Sunday, April 20, 2025. A memorial and burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia at a later date to be determined.

John was an exceptionally proud graduate of Texas A&M- Go Aggies! He received a degree in Industrial Technology, was a very proud member of the Aggie Corps of Cadets, and never lost his spirit for Aggie football. Thanksgiving, on occasion, included Threadgills and a football game!

John was married to the beautiful Diane Schattel for 39 years. They sailed, traveled, and had countless adventures as best friends! They loved their children and an epic cat, Puddy-tat. John especially loved a good “puddy flip.” He also loved Weimaraners and had several named Fritz. His love of the people and animals in his life was evident. He lived in the moment, always.

John was a proud USAF pilot, Vietnam Veteran, safety inspector for the State of Texas, and pilot trainer for American Airlines and Boeing.

John is survived by his children John Louis Schattel Jr. and Jill Frances Schattel, Cynthia Schattel Kosan and Keith James Kosan, and Christina Schattel-Curran Cozad David Charles Cozad, Michele Lynn Boverie and Annette Nicole Cameron and Kevin David Cameron and preceded in death by his sons Robert Louis Boverie, Jr. and James Noel Boverie. He is preceded in death by his daughter Cecilia Renee Baker. He is preceded in death by his siblings Adolf Joseph Schattel, Frank Edward Schattel, and Anthony George Schattel and his first wife, Leona Bergman Schattel Tibbetts.

John enjoyed a Saturday morning run in downtown Austin followed by some blueberry pancakes. He adored a sail on Lake Travis, Bluebell ice cream, and a plane ride to any destination with his bride, Diane. He had an adventurous spirit and was particularly proud of the fact that he went sky-diving on his 80th birthday. He wrote an autobiography of his life that focused on his military service, “Cold War Warrior, ” and also included many reflections on their travels. He was a gregarious and accepting father, grandfather, and great grandfather. We will miss him dearly.

In Lieu of flowers the family would love a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project.
