Gerald Edward Mercer
September 23, 1952 - June 7, 2022
Gerald “Jerry” Edward Mercer passed away on June 7, 2022 at his home in Highland Village, TX.
Jerry was born, along with his twin brother Jimmy, on September 23, 1952 to Harold and Lema Mercer in Houston, TX. Siblings included their older sister Karen, and then later Gregg and Pat. All five siblings remained close as they grew and there were many happy Mercer family events throughout the years.
From an early age Jerry enjoyed sports and the outdoors. In high school he excelled at football and especially basketball. His senior year of high school, at Cy-Fair High School, Jerry led the varsity basketball team to victory as state champions. Jerry was a popular student and was named Mr. Cy-Fair High School his senior year.
After graduating high school in 1971 he went on to play basketball for Texas A&M while studying civil engineering. Upon graduating from college in 1976, Jerry began working as an engineer in the Houston area, as his father had before him. Eventually he joined Rimkus Consulting, a position which later led to his move to the Dallas area in the late 1980s. He ended a successful career as a structural engineer when he retired from Rimkus in 2018.
Jerry met Suzanne Moore in the summer of 1987 during a trip to Mexico. They very quickly became close and married February 16, 1991 in Austin, TX. During their time together they loved to travel, especially on road trips throughout the United States. They also enjoyed many trips to Latin America, Mexico being their favorite. They remained together until Suzanne’s passing in July of 2021. He grieved the loss of Suzanne deeply.
Jerry was beloved by family and friends for his sense of humor and willingness to lend a hand. There was very little he couldn’t fix in his home or on his vehicles. He loved to be asked to help figure out a problem.
Jerry took much joy in the people in his life. He attended his 50th high school reunion last fall and was still friends with people he met in first grade. Jerry loved to attend sporting events to watch his nieces, nephews and friends play. He always had a natural ability to charm children and is known by many of them as an honorary grandfather.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Lema Mercer; his wife Suzanne Mercer; his sister Karen Ware; his brother Jimmy Mercer; his nephew Austin Mercer, his niece Melissa Mercer, and his niece Sandy Ware.
Jerry is survived by his brother, Gregg Mercer and his sister Pat Butterfras, his daughter, Kristin Vance; and his son, Branan Mercer. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Henry, Claudia and Eli and countless nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
