Aggies among pilots for Marine helicopter flyover Saturday

Susan "Sue" Owen '94 August 29, 2022 2:31 PM updated: September 6, 2022 1:25 PM

[Update: A second campus flyover has been confirmed for Saturday, Sept. 3, weather permitting. The helicopters will pass above Aggie Park circa 9:35 a.m. for the Aggie Park dedication, and then perform the regularly scheduled Kyle Field flyover circa 10:50 a.m. before kickoff of the Texas A&M vs. Sam Houston State.]

Aggies will be among the pilots of four Marine Corps helicopters for the flyover Saturday before Texas A&M's home opening football game vs. Sam Houston State.

Lt. Col. Morgan "Nose" Smyth ’02 and Capt. Nathan Hall ’18 will fly an AH-1Z (Viper) helicopter. Another Viper and two UH-1Y (Venom) helicopters will complete the flyover, all from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 Detachment A ("Red Dogs") of New Orleans.

If you’re an Association of Former Students donor, you help provide hotel accommodations for pilots and crew for home game flyovers. Thank you! The Association also hosts gameday events and away-game Yell Practices with the A&M yell leaders (tx.ag/Gameday), provides funding for Midnight Yell Practice and organizes Class Reunions including this weekend's Texas A&M Young Alumni Weekend!

The nickname “Skid Kids” is applied to Marines who work with helicopters such as the UH-1Y and AH-1Z that are based on the H-1 platform and have landing skids rather than wheels.

AH-1Zs:

  • Aggie pilots Smyth and Hall
  • Pilots Maj. Cray "RaBit" Pack and Maj. Zachary "Fran" Fulmer

UH-1Ys:

  • Pilots Maj. David "TWAC" Few and Maj. Kyle "T-BALL" Kapron; crew chief Cpl. Monica Pomales
  • Pilots Maj. Lorne "Buttons" Samson and Lt. Col. Sean "Possum" Dillon; crew chiefs Sgt. Miguelance Monzon and Lance Cpl. Ian Warrington

Join The Association at Aggie events this fall!

Whenever you're on campus, be sure to come check out the new Aggie Park, opening Sept. 2 with the free Aggie Park Kickoff Concert - both efforts led by The Association to bring Aggies together.
