AUSTIN, Texas - (September 4, 2018) – Sarah Percy Tovar, DDS, FAGD, of San Antonio, Texas, has been nominated by the San Antonio District Dental Society (SADDS) for the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s (Texas AGD) Texas New Dentist of the Year Award. This award is considered the most prestigious honor a new dentist in Texas can earn.

Dr. Tovar is one of only 11 dentists nominated for this year’s award. She and the other nominees will be honored at the Texas Academy Awards Pre-Party celebration Friday, September 21, during the Texas AGD’s annual Lone Star Dental Conference in Austin. Each nominee will be recognized and will receive an engraved plaque. The pre-party will conclude with the announcement of the 2018 Texas New Dentist of the Year. “There is no greater honor than to be nominated by your peers,” said Jeff Geno, DDS, MAGD, Texas AGD President. “The doctors nominated for this award are inspirations and role models for young dentists everywhere.”

Dr. Tovar received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Texas A&M/Baylor College of Dentistry in 2012. She was recognized for numerous accomplishments in dental school and sustained her journey of continuing education after graduation. In 2016, Dr. Tovar received her Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and was later inducted as a Fellow in the International College of Dentists in 2017. Dr. Tovar has an extensive list of leadership positions throughout several dental organizations on local, state, and national levels.

“Dr. Tovar has worked tirelessly for organized dentistry – the Academy of General Dentistry in particular,” said Dr. Ernie Luce. “This requires great vision and leadership, but also necessitates an enormous amount of ‘getting your hands dirty’ with all the detailed work that has to happen.”

She is an active member in various organizations catered toward the new dentist. From 2015-2016, she was chair of the SADDS New Dentist Committee where she helped guide the reorganization of the committee. Dr. Tovar also served as the Co-Director of the San Antonio AGD New Dentist Study Club where she selected lecture topics, speakers, and solicited corporate sponsorships. Additionally, she served as the Chair of the statewide Texas AGD 2018 New Dentist Conference where she led the organization of the event.

The Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s mission is to help general dentists succeed. It is the only association that exclusively represents the needs and interests of general dentists who are the primary care providers for patients of all ages and are responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management, and overall coordination of services related to patients’ oral health needs. Its 2,800 members partner together to help guide the journey of Fellowship, Mastership, and Lifelong Learning in order to provide quality dental care in general practice.
