Ann Courtnie Mathes
February 23, 1975 - March 30, 2018

Ann Courtnie Sikes Mathes of Ennis, Texas succumbed to a lengthy illness on March 30, 2018. She was born in Houston, Texas on February 23rd, 1975. She was the daughter of Robert Lionel Sikes and Marjorie Wynette Fitzgerald Sikes. She graduated from Ennis High School in 1993 and ever precocious, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M University at the age of 19 years. While in high school, she was both a Lionette, Honor Band Member, and honor student. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education Administration from University of Texas in Arlington in 1996.

On July 10, 1998, Ann married Clifford Robert Mathes of Athens, Texas. They began their life together with a wedding ceremony and honeymoon in Hawaii. Upon their return to Ennis, she threw herself wholeheartedly into her passions of being with her husband Cliff, educating young people, and starting a family with two beautiful sons. She loved friends and family and was loved in return.

Ann wore many hats. She was teacher, administrator, wife, Mother, friend, devout Christian, entrepreneur and lifelong friend. Throughout her illness, she appeared unsinkable. She was tireless in working with her fellow teachers to develop new and creative educational programs and serving as both administrator, teacher and innovator. She earned certifications in Mid-Management Administration, Elementary Self-Contained Education, Elementary Math, and Elementary Reading. Ann began the “Downtown Zumba” classes in Ennis, made cake balls, volunteered at baseball games, and loved spending family vacations at the beach and in the mountains of Colorado.

Ann’s career included beginning as a third grade teacher at Palmer ISD from 1995 to 1996 and then to Ennis ISD as a fifth grade Math and Science teacher from 1996 to 1999. From there she returned to Palmer ISD as Assistant Principal/Interim Principal Pre-K through 4th grade and then to Midlothian ISD as Assistant Principal for Pre-K to 4th grade. From 2003 until 2014, Ann worked for Ennis Independent School District. She served as Team Leader, UIL Number Sense Coach, was responsible for planning and implementing “Junk Box Wars,” was Substitute Assistant Principal, and Piloted “Bring Your Own Device.” From 2014 until her medical retirement in June of 2017, she served as 1st-6th Grade Math/Science Coach and Math Specialist. After retirement, Ann taught Chinese school children English through online classes.

Ann was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and ATPE. She was dedicated to her community, her family, and her faith. She was enthusiastic about teaching her two sons to love learning and supporting them in their sports. Charles is an avid tennis player and Curtis is passionate about baseball. Ann was loved her boys.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Marjorie and Robert Sikes. She is survived by her husband of twenty years, Cliff Mathes, by sons, Charles and Curtis Mathes, and her many friends and coworkers from Ennis.

Ann touched many lives. She was said by some to be a Hero, persistently rising to the occasion without self-pity or hesitation. For many us, she was lovingly known as “Amazing Ann.” She provided a point of light by which others might plot their lives.

Throughout her lengthy illness, Ann continued to manage her role as wife, mother, educator, friend and devout Christian with remarkable endurance. She never waivered in her support for her husband, Cliff, a dedicated fan for Charles in his pursuit of tennis, and for her son, Curtis, in his love of baseball and reading the Bible with his mother last year.

Ann had a passion for teaching and immediately prior to her death, she continued to teach English to young Chinese children. Ann’s friends were lifelong, and she was fortunate to have many wonderful, caring friends and family members in her lifetime.

Throughout her life, Ann served as a point of light by which others might set their course. She will always be remembered as “Amazing Ann”.
